From the Connecticut Post this weekend: The continued rift in Congress over economic and political philosophies got in the way of extending jobless benefits and could affect an inordinate number of older, out-of-work Connecticut residents.
On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives failed to extend jobless benefits past Nov. 30, which could leave nearly 2 million Americans searching for money to buy food and pay for shelter by the end of December when they get their final unemployment checks. From The New Britain Herald last week: Connecticut’s economy is in a deep, deep hole. Measuring unemployment on the basis of historical patterns of labor force participation, there are nearly 400,000 working age adults who want jobs, but don’t have them or have part-time but need full-time jobs.
Compounding this challenge is the fiscal reality that the state government faces massive deficits — $9.5 billion over the next three fiscal years. Get the full story here.

JNEN and its member organizations extend our congratulations to all of the winners in this month’s elections throughout New England.
We see this election as a fresh start in working together to bring jobs and prosperity to the entire region. The acrimonious and polarizing debate of the past needs to end, and rational, cooperative problem solving needs to begin. All stakeholders need to come to the table: business, labor, legislators, governors and those who want to see the return of jobs to the region. All ideas should be considered objectively and in full. The outcome needs to be policy built on consensus. Consensus will not happen without honest discussion, free of hidden agendas with a sense that compromise is always possible and necessary.
JNEN will continue to participate in any discussion focused on the number one issue facing New England: jobs. We will bring suggestions, criticism and support to the process. We will reach out to others in the business community and we will continue to be a voice in support of sound economic reform and stability.
We look forward to the coming months as we all renew our commitment to retaining and creating jobs throughout the region.

From the Regional Plan Association on Monday: Connecticut residents have finally caught up on their sleep after our extended cliff-hanger of a gubernatorial election. Now that we’ve finally got a governor-elect, it’s time to reflect on what this and other personnel shifts mean for the state’s growth prospects.
Changes at the state and federal level, many of them part of the red tide sweeping the country, will complicate efforts to grow our state’s economy while meeting environmental and social goals. Check out the full story here.

From The Enterprise this weekend:
Robert Bennett is in a better position than many business owners in the current economic climate. His company, Custom Machine & Tool, has been expanding at a rapid rate in recent years and quickly outgrowing its Weymouth plant.
What Bennett didn’t have was cash to pay for renovations to the new building he bought this year in Hanover. But a $150,000 loan from Eastern Bank under a Small Business Administration program is transforming a vacant warehouse into a machine shop that will begin operations later this month. From the Star Telegram:
The well-paying, predominantly white-collar jobs that once sustained many American communities are disappearing at an alarming rate, keeping the unemployment rate stubbornly high despite the end of the Great Recession.
More troubling, those jobs in accounting, financial analysis, commercial printing and a broad array of other mostly white-collar occupations are unlikely to come back, experts say. Here is the full story.
