The Connecticut Mirror: Elements of 'Plan B' on the table despite concessions approval

Monday, August 29th, 2011

With the concession deal ratified by unionized workers and roughly 2,800 layoff notices now revoked, the ugliest elements of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s budget-balancing alternative to givebacks have been put away. But even though most of Malloy’s $1.6 billion concession plan has been approved, that doesn’t mean every  option raised last month when concessions still hung in the balance has been scrapped. More than 128 layoffs were ordered for non-unionized personnel, including several employees at government watchdog agencies, whose leaders insist they were supposed to be statutorily insulated from such cutbacks. Julie Michaelson has spent five years working on her hospital’s information technology system, but she says it would be a misconception to think she’s computer savvy. Both are taking federally funded courses at Capital Community College, part of a national effort to educate more than 10,500 people in the electronic systems that, after years of discussion, are poised to become commonplace in medicine. Metro West Daily : MetroWest stimulus funds are drying up

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

MetroWest towns have spent nearly all of the $162 million in federal stimulus money awarded in 2009, and legislators and town officials say the funds have greatly improved those communities. But the money is almost gone now, and the question now is: What’s next? Some worry towns will suffer. ”The hope was that the economy would be good enough to pick up the slack. That hasn’t happened. The recession has lasted longer and gone deeper than any of us thought it would,” said Jeffrey Simon, director of the Massachusetts Recovery and Reinvestment office, which oversees distribution of the federal money. Simon said the program was designed for two years to fund one-time projects now finished. News Times : Small business is 'big’ business in Connecticut — and deserves more respect

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

This month it has been my pleasure to meet with the owners of some of Connecticut’s century-old small businesses that defy the odds and continue to thrive in the midst of economic chaos around the world. Much has been made of new state incentives for big businesses who create hundreds of jobs, but it is important to remember that the small business sector, Sub chapter S’s or LLC’s, are the true backbone of our state’s economy. Between 70 to 80 percent of our 1.6 million jobs are created by businesses with 10 employees or fewer.
