The Republican American: Conn. Loses 300 Jobs in July, Gained 3,300 in June

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Connecticut lost 300 jobs in July and the unemployment rate held at 9.1 percent, state labor officials said Thursday. The state’s rate is the same as the latest figure for the national jobless rate. Labor officials also said Thursday that June’s estimated 4,100-job loss was revised to instead show a gain of 3,300. The change was a result of a revision to the local government sector estimate related to local school districts, which had an extended school year to make up for snow days and did not see the normal June drop in employment. The state lost 5,500 jobs in May. Read More

Business Measures Lead to Job Creation

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Jobs For New England Now strives to promote economic growth throughout New England by encouraging innovation, entrepreneurship, and policies that promote job creation. Our coalition has stood behind policymakers that have proven to be good stewards of these goals and will continue to do so in the future. By creating new business opportunities in New England, we can boost the economy through more sustainable measures. Economic growth and job creation will make New England a happier, friendlier and more prosperous place to call home.

On Monday the Communications Workers of America (CWA) released a paper on the positive economic effects of the merger between AT&T and T-Mobile that caught our attention. The study, conducted by the Economic Policy Institute, found that the merger would create 96,000 jobs over the next seven years. This would provide a much-needed boost to the economy, especially here in New England, giving more people access to not only the life-changing technology that is mobile broadband, but also jobs that have been scarce in these tough economic times.

The merger will also generate billions of dollars in capital investments, planned for building out a 4G LTE broadband network. These expansion projects will indirectly create even more opportunities for work once again putting money back into the hands of Americans.

We need to be fostering entrepreneurship and innovation regularly but this is especially important during times of economic hardship. We know that New England is capable of creating new sustainable businesses and we have shown that by the persistence of our businesses during this economy. This merger will give ‘out-of-the-box’ thinkers the ability to continue to innovate and create the technologies of tomorrow. Our coalition is excited about the possibilities it has to offer and we think that you should be too.
