Connecticut Businesses and Pro-Business Groups To Launch “Jobs for Connecticut Now”
Coalition will promote economic development and job growth in the region
HARTFORD, CT– As the economic crisis continues to create financial woes across the country and unemployment rates climb higher throughout New England, several businesses and pro-business groups have joined together to launch Jobs for Connecticut Now. The mission of the organization is to make job creation and job retention a top priority in Connecticut.
“For too long, this region of the country has seen too many businesses close their doors and take deserving jobs away from our proud residents,” said Stephen Bull, Co-Chairman of Jobs for New England Now and a member of the Greater Danbury Chamber of Commerce. “We believe in a prosperous future for Connecticut but we can no longer sit idly by and continue to support an environment that fails to promote and encourage economic development in our area.”
“We need to find creative solutions that will make this area more attractive to businesses that are willing to invest in our people. We need to make New England a venue of growth, and encourage policymakers to look at how new measures will impact the economic vitality of the state,” said Tony Sheridan, the other Co-Chairman of Jobs for New England Now, and President of the Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce.
Sheridan went on to say, “We believe Jobs for Connecticut Now will be a leading voice to inform the public about new trends that are negatively impacting business and job growth, as well as provide policymakers with important viewpoints from the business community that must be addressed when considering short-term and long-term economic decisions.”
Jobs for Connecticut Now is the first state project created by a larger organization, Jobs for New England Now, which brings together business leaders, pro-business groups, and non-profit organizations from across New England to seek more business friendly policies in the region.
In their first endeavor to promote stronger business policies across the state, Sheridan and Bull and more than 130 businesses and pro-business organizations sent an open letter to Connecticut’s policymakers on March 25th urging them to “adopt a new attitude that reverses the perception that Connecticut is an unfriendly place to do business and instead encourage economic growth for the our state.”
Moving forward, the project will have an active online presence through its website at www.jobsforconnecticutnow.org. This website will house studies, opinion pieces, recent news and blog commentary from coalition members, and other academic experts. Additionally, members of Jobs for Connecticut Now will work throughout the region in a variety of ways to promote pro-business policies that will help spur job growth and maintain existing job opportunities throughout the region.
